Outdoor-Hive Newsletter November 20, 2024

Tips and career/job opportunities in the shooting, hunting, archery, and sportfishing Industries.

There are six more weeks of 2024, and that is a tremendous amount of time to get your career moving forward. This week, we are highlighting the value of cover letters. A quick story from my past experience in litigation support. My absolute best hire in my career was an employee, VK. Ultimately she moved up through the ranks and took over my position.

When I asked her why she chose our company — over all of the opportunity for a Penn State graduate — she told me that it was one of the few jobs she applied for in the area where she didn’t have to write a cover letter. Of course, that was back in 1999. The world has changed dramatically in the last 25 years. Today, with most resumes running through an Applicant Tracking Systems, you cannot afford to take this approach. During that time, I interviewed everyone possible. However, the recruiters and HR folks working today only have so much time, so they have to do some screening ahead of time. Ensure your best work is highlighted in your cover letter.

Have a great week everyone!

Mastering the Art of Cover Letter Writing: Your Key to Job Search Success

In today's competitive job market, a well-crafted cover letter can be the difference between landing your dream job and getting lost in the pile of applications. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you create a standout cover letter that will catch the eye of recruiters and hiring managers.

1. Research Is Your Foundation

Before you start writing, dive deep into the company you're applying to. Understanding their products, culture, values, and challenges will allow you to tailor your letter effectively. This knowledge demonstrates your genuine interest and commitment to the role.

2. Customize for Each Application

One size does not fit all when it comes to cover letters. Tailor your message to the specific job and employer. Highlight how your skills and experiences align with the job requirements, using concrete examples from your past roles.

3. Know Your Audience

Remember, your letter may be screened by both applicant tracking systems (ATS) and human recruiters. Use relevant keywords from the job description to pass ATS filters, while also crafting a compelling narrative for human readers.

4. Showcase Your Value

Clearly articulate how you can contribute to the company's goals and mission. Use specific examples of past achievements, quantifying your successes where possible. This helps the employer envision the value you'll bring to their organization.

5. Be Specific and Detailed

Vague statements won't cut it. Include concrete facts and figures about your accomplishments. Whether it's the number of people you've managed or the percentage increase in sales you've achieved, these details make your claims more credible and impactful.

6. Show Enthusiasm

Convey your excitement for the role and the company. Use positive, action-oriented language to express your motivation and the energy you'll bring to the position.

7. Structure and Format Both Matter

Ensure your cover letter includes all essential sections: header, salutation, introduction, body paragraphs, closing, and sign-off. Choose an appropriate template and font that matches the industry and company culture. Maintain consistent formatting throughout your resume and cover letter for a professional appearance.

8. Final Checklist

  • Verify all contact information is correct

  • Craft a catchy opening paragraph

  • Use bullet points in body paragraphs to highlight achievements

  • Keep font and formatting consistent (11-12 point size, standard business fonts)

  • Proofread thoroughly for errors and clarity and if possible get a second pair of eyes to look it over

By following these guidelines, you'll create a compelling cover letter that not only showcases your qualifications but also demonstrates your enthusiasm and fit for the role. Remember, your cover letter is often your first impression – make it count!

Please share this newsletter with anyone you know who is looking and will benefit from these great opportunities.
