Tips and Career/Job Opportunities in the Shooting, Hunting, Archery, Recreational Fishing, and Outdoor Industries.

Hello from Missoula, Montana! This week, I’m attending the Outdoor Media Summit. This fantastic summit is a combination of brands, tourism, and outdoor media. It’s focused on education, networking, and a lot of fun activities.
Networking events are incredibly important to me as a publisher and outdoor writer, as well as in my new role as the Executive Director of AGLOW (Association of Greater Lakes Outdoor Writers). This event is one of my favorite events of the year, and I really like the incredible opportunity to connect with amazing speakers, attendees, and brands.
I’m not afraid to say, the most important secret to my success, my ability to grow and excel in my career is due to the people in my network. I’ve spent the better part of 30-plus years building connections with people whom I can bounce ideas off, ask questions, and seek advice. Likewise, I know people across the industry. When I have questions about an opportunity, or need to gain information so I can complete an article, I know who to ask for a quick, insightful answer.
The shooting, archery, hunting, and recreational fishing industry is a small community of companies and people who are — for the most part — closely connected. While we may have 250,000-plus jobs in our industry, it’s all inside a small number of companies and retailers. Only 1,800 companies exhibit at the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade show (SHOT) each year. While that number has grown over the years, it is still a small number. There are far less companies at the Archery Trade Association (ATA) and American Sport Fishing (ICAST) shows. However, these are the manufacturers, distributers, and retailers that we specifically focus on for this newsletter.
When building a career, spend the time to grow your connections and create relationships with people in your industry. Spend the time to focus on your connections and build relationships within the industry — if you want to build your career, and don’t forget to follow us at Outdoor-Hive on LinkedIn.

I got a job as a human cannonball.
It was a high-caliber position! But, I had a short fuse and got fired.
I tried working in a muffler factory but that was exhausting.
I thought about being a knife-maker. I made great blades, but I just couldn’t handle it.
